This has probably happened to you at least once. You had a day where you just could not help but go to the toilet. As soon as you empty the bladder, go back again. What causes this? And more importantly, should you be concerned? Today we will talk about frequent urination.

Frequent urination: What causes it?

Overactive bladder is a common occurrence among today’s population, especially women. Usually we have a desire to urinate often when we drink more fluid than usual. This is a good thing because our kidneys  need to filter the toxins from our bodies. But there are times when we have to go to the toilet all the time without drinking excess fluids.

If you have to get up many times a night to pee, it is known as nocturia. It is more prevalent among men than women, especially when they reach a certain age and begin to have prostate problems. But for women, the overactive bladder comes and goes, and it may be due to some of the following factors, so take a minute to review them.

1. Too many energy drinks

This may come as a surprise, but we are not just talking about consuming too much coffee other caffeinated beverages such as sodas and energy drinks can affect you. It’s not a good idea, nor is it healthy. Remember that the amount of urine we produce daily depends primarily on the electrolyte balance in the body. If we drink too many energy drinks in the long run, it can create an imbalance in the kidneys. It is simply not worth the risk, so do not overdo these drinks.  

2. Diabetes

Do not panic because it is something that can be immediately determined with a simple test. Diabetes has many symptoms and frequent urination is one of them. It results in dehydration and a tendency to lower potassium levels. But stay calm, because diabetes is also associated with other factors such as sudden weight loss, lethargy, fatigue, fainting… having to urinate is often basically due to the body’s inability to produce insulin, so the excess sugar in the blood will leave it with urine. All this makes us thirsty, and in turn it causes more frequent urination.  

3. Certain medications

Sometimes certain medical treatments can cause changes in the bladder and cause more frequent urination. Substances such as lorazepam typically produce these effects. Always read the side effects of any new medication and look for if you experience them during your course of treatment.  

4. Disorders due to stress

Anxiety and stress are conditions that occur at certain periods in our lives and they can even change our biological processes. Stomach problems, intestinal problems, nervousness, fatigue, diarrhea and no doubt an overactive bladder are quite common during these periods of anxiety. You need to tell your doctor if you notice this happening to you, and always remember to bring a bottle of water. Every time you go to the toilet to pee, drink some water to avoid getting dehydrated.   

5. Infections

Urinary tract infections  are without a doubt the most common cause of frequent urination. Infections of the urethra, bladder itself, kidney tissue, or even the vulva or vagina can make us suffer from this unpleasant condition. Sometimes they are caused by hormonal shifts, bacteria, or low immune system. Although they are common, always go to your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Then you will receive the right treatment of course because they will be able to identify what caused the infection and what the right medication would be. But here are a few simple tips you can follow at home.

2. Simple remedies for overactive bladder syndrome

Frequent urination can be a symptom of a disease or an indication of another health problem. So the first thing you need to find out is what is causing the problem. Is it stress, or is it an infection? Ideally, you will follow a treatment plan prescribed by a doctor, but you can also follow these simple guidelines:

  1. Change your diet : avoid irritating ingredients and foods such as vinegar, heavy spices, coffee, strong peppers, red meat, chocolate, cow’s milk and any dairy products, flour and refined sugar. Increase your consumption of vegetables.
  2. Start your mornings with a tea made with horseradish ke and a bit of lemon juice.
  3. Eat a clove of garlic every night  with a glass of warm water. It is an amazing bactericide.
  4. Ginger tea  is a great anti-inflammatory agent, which certainly will help.
  5. Drink plenty of water  to maintain water balance.
